CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA, December 14, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ — Prof. Barry W. Ninham has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all considered during the selection process.

Barry Ninham was educated as a Mathematical Physicist at the Universities of Western Australia and Maryland. His work in the 1960’s led to new insights into the subtleties of molecular forces in biology. This led to his appointment in 1970 as Head of a new Research Department in Natural Sciences (Applied Mathematics) in the Institute of Advanced Studies at the Australian National University. The principal research focus of his team was Colloid and Surface Chemistry in which his Department became the leading international center. This interdisciplinary branch of physical chemistry underpins many sciences from molecular biology to nanotechnology in chemical engineering. His best known work is in measurement and theory of molecular forces and how these conspire with the geometries of molecules like proteins and lipids to form cells and membranes.

Professor Ninham has mentored or directed numerous students and research fellows more than 100 of whom have become full professors in Australia and other countries. A number became Fellows of the Australian Academy of Sciences and of the Royal Society. He has published over 500 papers and several books. His contributions are not limited to colloid science. They span mathematics, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics, chemical engineering, and nanotechnology. His work has attracted numerous awards, honours and professorships from Sweden, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, Russia, USA, and Australia.

His work over the last two decades has been motivated by his startling discovery and demonstration that the foundations of colloid and physical chemistry are seriously flawed. The ramifications are not yet fully appreciated. These discoveries have wide and exciting implications that open up a new era and opportunities that bridge the physical, biological and medical sciences. He is currently heavily engaged in applying these advances to groundbreaking new technologies involving water, the availability of fresh water being as serious a challenge to humanity as climate change.

To take advantage of these new advances, Breakthrough Technologies was founded to leverage this new knowledge to develop a range of simple, low cost, scalable applications in water treatment. Among these are sterilisation of viruses and bacteria, selective heavy metal removal and harvesting, desalination, new non carcinogenic soaps, as well as treatment of mining waste, carbon dioxide sequestration and its use in infrastructure and agriculture and other environmental issues.

The new refurbishment of a venerable old discipline is offering previously unimaginable opportunities.
